Creating a Plot Legend

To create one or more plot legends:

  1. Select the target plot in the plot window or Object Manager.
  2. Click the Graph Tools | Add to Graph | Plot Legend command.
  3. All available legends for the selected plot are created and automatically arranged outside the graph area. Newly created legends are automatically selected.
  4. Edit the legend properties in the Property Manager.

See the Plot Legend page for more details on naming conventions, positioning, and additional properties.

Note: Legends are placed at the top-right outside the graph and positioned sequentially outward so they do not overlap. Newly created legends are automatically selected

Plot Legend Naming

Plot legends are automatically named according to the following structure:

<specifier> <legend type> - <plot name>

Examples include Fill Color Scale - Y1 or Class Symbol Legend - Beans. If you rename the plot, the legend name automatically updates to match. Manually editing the legend name in the Property Manager overrides dynamic name updating.

Editing a Plot Legend

To change the features of a plot legend, select the legend and edit its properties in the Property Manager. You can also right-click the legend to access options such as Properties or Reorder/Select Legend Entries.

The legend properties contain the following sections in the Property Manager:

Detaching Legends

If you need to copy, edit, or add additional information to a legend, such as company information, the legend can be detached from the graph. Legends edited in this manner are no longer attached to the graph, so make sure no additional changes are necessary before proceeding with this process. When detaching a bubble, wind, or class legend, the wind or class legend is hidden, and the legend is recreated with drawn objects. When detaching other legends, the original legend is removed.

Creating Graph and Document Legends

Select any part of a graph or plot and click Graph Tools | Add to Graph | Graph Legend or Multi-Graph Legend to create higher-level legends for multiple plots or graphs.
